George Wilson’s academic career saw him teach at Middlebury College, Carleton University, University of British Columbia and Cornell University before he moved to Indiana University, where he was variously director of the Transportation Research Centre, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and chairman of the Department of Economics.

A transportation advisor on the Presidential Task Force for U.S. president Lyndon B. Johnson and president-elect Richard Nixon, Wilson was a transportation consultant to the governments of the US, Canada, Taiwan, Malaysia, El Salvador, Costa Rica.

Among his awards and honours were the Salzberg Memorial Award for Transportation from Syracuse University; MBA Teaching Excellence Award from Indiana University; and Distinguished Researcher Award from the Transportation Research Forum.

Wilson was the first recipient of the A.D. Dunton Alumni Award of Distinction in 1974.
