Jim Watson , BA / 83

Serving as one of Carleton’s greatest ambassadors, Watson’s steadfast commitment to public service is an exemplary Carleton success story. Watson cut his political teeth in student government at Carleton in the 1980s when he served as president of the Rideau River Residence Association. He graduated from Carleton with a bachelor of arts in mass communications in 1983.

Watson’s unwavering support of Carleton University is extraordinary. He’s volunteered in a variety of capacities, including a term as President of the Alumni Association, service on the Board of Governors from 1987 to 1994, and as guest speaker at several alumni and student events.

Indeed Watson’s record speaks for itself with a lengthy record of achievement. Some highlights include City of Ottawa Councillor and Mayor, MPP, former minister of Health Promotion and current minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing in the Ontario Legislature.

Looking back on his career since graduating, Watson notes, “The education I received at Carleton has been invaluable to me in my career, and I believe graduates have a responsibility to give something back to their alma mater.”
