Jean Vaillancourt was appointed rector of the Université du Québec en Outaouais in January 2005. He was previously dean of research at UQO, a post he held from December 2001.

During his career, Vaillancourt has served the scientific community in various fora including the executive office of Centre de recherche en mathématiques in Montreal, the management committee of the Institut des sciences mathématiques, Quebec, the board of directors of the Statistical Society of Canada, the commission on education and research of the Conseil supérieur de l’éducation, Quebec, as well as numerous committees of Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada. He also participated in the creation of CoRIMedia, an academic research consortium on on digital imaging, video, audio and multimedia.

Vaillancourt is a member of the Gatineau chamber of commerce, secretary on the Développement économique—CLD Gatineau board of directors, board member of the Regroupement des gens d’affaires and a member of executive of the Université du Québec. His expertise is also used on the standing advisory committee on the act and by-laws of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
