
Eric Sprott has more than 35 years of experience in the investment industry. After earning his designation as a Chartered Accountant, Sprott entered the investment industry as a research analyst at Merrill Lynch. In 1981, he founded Sprott Securities Inc. (SSI) one of Canada’s largest independently owned institutional brokerage firms, and served as CEO and Chief Investment Officer. After establishing Sprott Asset Management in 2000, Sprott divested his ownership of SSI to its employees.
Carleton awarded Sprott a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa in 2003 in recognition of an outstanding career as an entrepreneur, investor and philanthropist. Sprott established an endowed fund at Carleton that annually offers 500-600 bursaries. In 2001, he donated $10 million to the School of Business which was renamed in his honour.
In 2006, Sprott received the Ontario region Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
