After completing two terms as dean of science at McGill University, Alan Shaver was appointed vice-president academic and provost of Dalhousie University in July 2006. A graduate of Carleton and M.I.T., Shaver has published more than 130 papers on a variety of research topics including the chemistry of soluble metal complexes with small sulfur containing molecules.

At McGill, he served as a member of the Board of Governors and held a leadership position in the faculty association. He also served as President of the Conference of Canadian Deans of Science.
