Herbert Nesbitt ,

A widely respected researcher in the field of entomology, H.H.J. Nesbitt was one of Carleton’s longest serving faculty members.

His science career began when he joined the Department of Agriculture in Ottawa in 1939 as a researcher. Nesbitt started teaching biology on a part-time basis at Carleton and became the full-time assistant professor of its fledgling biology department in 1948. He went on to head the department and build it into one of the finest in the country.

Nesbitt was director of science studies and the first dean of the Faculty of Science, a post he held from 1963 to 1975. He served as clerk of the university Senate from 1975 to 1981 and was named professor emeritus of biology in 1978.

Nesbitt was given an honorary doctorate of science from Carleton in 1978 and the university’s Founder’s Award in 1998. He was honoured by Carleton again when its renovated and expanded biology facilities were renamed the H.H.J. Nesbitt Biology Building.
