Michael Makin , BJ / 86

After a brief stint as a reporter and public affairs officer with the Canadian government, Michael Makin began his career in association management 20 years ago, after earning an MBA from the University of Phoenix. He was president of the Canadian Printing Industries Association and for almost 10 years served as an executive with the Canadian Construction Association before taking on his current position in 2002.

Makin serves as secretary to the Board of Directors of the Graphic Arts Show Corporation, secretary to the Graphic Arts Educational Research Foundation, president of the Printing and Graphics Scholarship Trust Fund, and as a director of the World Print and Communications Forum, based in Brussels.

A member of the American Society of Association Executives, the Pittsburgh Society of Association Executives and the Society for Human Resource Management, Makin is a former national president of the Carleton University Alumni Association and a past governor and senator of the university.

In 2005, he received the Earl Sundeen Award for contributions to education by the International Graphics Arts Education Association; in 2006 he was named a member of the Ben Franklin Honor Society.
