Laura Magee spent much of her fourth year in Carleton’s industrial design program conceptualizing and designing a unique wearable device, the SugarWear Diabetic Companion, which would monitor the blood-sugar levels of diabetic children. The non-invasive creation relies on a process known as reverse iontophoresis, which attracts electrons from the interstitial fluid that lies just underneath the skin, and delivers a new reading every 20 minutes.

The design won the Marc C. Gauthier Award in Innovative Technologies at the 27th annual Industrial Design Graduation Exhibition and won an award for the best ideation of design concept at the IEEE International Symposium of Wearable Computers in Washington.
