Dr. Margaret Wade Labarge’s association with Carleton began in 1952, when she joined the history department as a lecturer in medieval history. She has been an adjunct research professor at Carleton since 1983. In addition to her teaching duties, Labarge is an acclaimed medieval scholar. She has written nine books on the medieval world and its personalities.

Labarge was a member of the Board of Governors from 1984 to 1993; chair of The Associates of Carleton University from 1982 to 1993; and chair of the Campaign Needs Steering Committee for the university’s $50 million Challenge Fund Campaign launched in 1993.

Throughout her career, Labarge has received numerous awards and honours, including two honorary doctorate degrees including Doctor of Literature, honoris causa, from Carleton. She was inducted into the Order of Canada in 1982 for her work as a historian and author. In 1988, she was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She was elected President of the Canadian Society of Medievalists in 1993.

In 1988, Labarge donated her records to the Carleton University Archives. She has also been a financial benefactor of Carleton, creating the Margaret Wade Labarge Graduate Student Research Assistance Fund, a permanently endowed student scholarship at Carleton.

Carleton presented Labarge with the 2001 Founders Award.
