Jim Judd , MA/72 / BAHon/71

Armed with a bachelor’s degree in political science and master’s in international affairs, Jim Judd joined the Department of External Affairs in 1973, beginning his long career in the public service.

Judd held various positions in the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, including assistant deputy minister. He was the G-7 deputy and assistant deputy minister in the department of finance, International Trade and Finance; the deputy minister of the Department of National Defence; and secretary of the Treasury Board before being appointed director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service in 2004. As director, Judd oversees the collection, analysis and retention of information or intelligence on activities that may pose a threat to the security of Canada.

A former member of the Carleton’s President’s Advisory Council, Judd has been a featured speaker at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the Ottawa Branch of the Carleton University Alumni Association.

Judd received the 2009 Outstanding Achievement Award from the Government of Canada, the most prestigious in the public service.
