While devotion to the betterment of one’s community often comes with few individual riches, the rewards everyone reaps can be immense. Franklin’s dedication to building a better community in Nepean and at Carleton University exemplifies this axiom.

Graduating from Carleton in 1971, he took no time in being elected to municipal politics, earning a set on the Nepean council in 1973. After being elected mayor, he wisely reformed the city’s finances while enhancing community initiatives, quickly making Nepean the envy of municipalities across Canada.

Franklin was loved and recognized for his long and distinguished association with Carleton. In 1998, he was the recipient of the A.D. Dunton Alumni Award, given by the Carleton University Alumni Association, in recognition of his outstanding achievement to public service. The admiration and respect of his constituents, colleagues and friends at the university are testaments to Franklin’s inspirational leadership and unwavering support for his community.
