Elementary school teacher Paul Dewar was elected as the NDP Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Centre in 2006. An advocate for children and community leader in Ottawa, Dewar was vice-president of the Ottawa Carleton Elementary School Teachers’ Federation, representing some 3,000 Ottawa teachers. He is also a board member on the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO).
Before embarking on a political career, Dewar earned a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University in Kingston and his BA in political science and economics from Carleton. He was previously a project organizer for Tools for Peace in Nicaragua, a supervisor at Viewpoints Market Research and a program promotion specialist at the then Health and Welfare Canada.
