Louise Charron , BA / 73 , L.L.B.

Justice Charron was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada on August 30, 2004 after holding many positions within the judicial system.

Called to the Ontario bar in 1977, Justice Charron left private practice to become a full-time assistant Crown attorney for Ottawa-Carleton. From 1985 to 1988, she was assistant professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa. In 1988, she was appointed to the District Court of Ontario, and was then elevated to the Ontario Court of Appeal. From 1994 to 1996 and from 2003 to 2004, she was associate director of the National Judicial Institute.

She was honoured in June 2005 by the Ottawa Chapter of the Women’s Law Association of Ontario with The President’s Award, given to women who have shown, through service to the community, interest in and support of women in the profession and the community at large, and a commitment to the advancement of women. She has also been presented with honourary degrees from the Law Society of Upper Canada, LL.D. (Hon.) in 2004, Nipissing University, LL.D. (Hon.) in 2005, Laurentian University, L.L.D. (Hon.) in 2006. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by American College of Trial Lawyers in 2007.
