Matthew Bellamy, PhD/01, MA/96, BA(Hons)/94, won one of Canada’s most prestigious literary awards, the $20,000 National Business Book Award, in April 2006 for Profiting the Crown: Canada’s Polymer Corporation, 1942-1990.

The book, begun in 1998 as his PhD thesis, chronicles Polymer’s evolution from a military supplier during the Second World War to a profitable producer of synthetic rubber. Before it was sold to German giant Bayer AG in 1990, the company was considered one of Canada’ most successful Crown corporations for its ability to serve public policy while achieving commercial success.

An instructor in Carleton’s department of history, Bellamy specializes in business history and government-business relations.

Profiting the Crown is published by McGill-Queen’s University Press.
