If commitment to one’s beliefs is measured by one’s lifelong pursuits, Retired Brigadier-General Beattie epitomizes the principal service above self. With a sense of duty rarely demonstrated, Beattie’s life work with the United Nations, the Canadian Armed Forces and Carleton University are extraordinary. While serving the UN, principally in Cyprus, he held crucial positions including Operations Officer and Canadian Contingent Commander for which he was appointed a Commander of the Order of Military Merit.

His relationship with Carleton University is also remarkable. From his years of being a student where he played hockey and football for the Ravens, to serving as President of the Carleton University Alumni Association, Beattie’s pride in his alma matter is far-reaching. As Beattie states “I shall always be grateful for the challenges, opportunities, experiences and rewards which Carleton has made possible for me and for my colleagues over the past 50 years.” He was awarded the A.D. Dunton Award in 1979 in recognition of outstanding contribution to his country.
