Franz Baumann , PhD / 92

Franz Baumann worked for the European Parliament in Luxemburg, the European Commission in Brussels and the electronics company Siemens in Munich before beginning his United Nations career in 1980 as a programme officer in Nigeria with the United Nations Development Programme and joined the United Nations Secretariat in 1985. He served at New York headquarters in various capacities, among them in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations as executive officer, in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General as senior officer and in the Department for General Assembly Affairs and Conference Management as executive officer. In 1993, he was chief administrative officer of the joint United Nations/ Organization of American States Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Haiti. In 2002, he transferred to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) as director for management and was appointed UNOV’s deputy director-general in 2004 and acting executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in 2006. He headed the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in 2007.

Owing to its strong research and teaching focus on West Africa, Baumann chose Carleton for his post-graduate studies. He also studied in Germany and England, and holds a degree in public administration from the University of Konstanz.
