The department of electronics’ Atif Shamim and Muhammad Arsalan, together with adviser Langis Roy, co-authored a paper describing a packaging technique to connect the antenna of portable devices to the electronic circuits via a wireless connection between a micro-antenna embedded within the circuits on the chip. The paper was named the best paper at the European Wireless Technology Conference in 2008.

The Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation honoured Arsalan and Shamim as student researchers of the year in 2008 for their work in the field of wireless biomedical sensors and in 2010 with the Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The researchers were awarded the ITAC Strategic Microelectronics Council Industrial Collaboration Award in 2007 for a wireless dosimeter project with potential for commercialization. Their dosimeter overcomes the limitations of current models that are too large or restricted by wires, or have low sensitivity to radiation or a short transmission range.

Arsalan has also received several prestigious entrepreneurial awards, including the 2010 OCRI Student Entrepreneur Award, Enterprize Canada 2009 (Canada’s largest entrepreneurial championship), Wes Nicol Business Plan Competition 2008, and Launchpad $50k Entrepreneurial Award 2008.
