Murray Angus has been recognized with the Order of Canada in the field of education “for his varied contributions to building awareness and respect for Canada’s Native people and their traditions, and for the role he has played in empowering Inuit youth as one of the founders of the Nunavut Sivuniksavut college program in Ottawa.”

Angus helped found Nunavut Sivuniksavut, eight-month college program, in 1985 for Inuit youth. The program brings high school graduates from Nunavut to Ottawa to prepare them for post-secondary studies and career opportunities while teaching them Nunavut’s history, politics and culture He taught in the program for the six years, before leaving to do consulting work, and returned to the program in 1997 as a coordinator.

Angus holds master’s degrees in religious studies from St. Mary’s University and social work from Carleton and a certificate in adult education from St. Francis Xavier University.
