George Anderson , BA / 69

George Anderson has worked energetically and effectively to improve living conditions for people in all walks of life. His imprint can be found on many important segments of Canadian society. As the former president and CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, he established housing programs for modest-income families. Of equal importance is his service at the helm of the Insurance Bureau of Canada. In concert with government, the past-president and CEO helped to develop strategic responses to enhance our ability to withstand and recover from natural disasters and catastrophic events. He also worked tirelessly to introduce a graduated licensing system for novice drivers that reduces the loss of life and injury resulting from collisions.

In 2002, Anderson was appointed a companion of the Order of Canada. His achievements have also been recognized by Carleton University, which granted him an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Anderson previously earned a BA (with distinction) from Carleton and graduated with an MA from the University of Regina.

Anderson has been a fellow of the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs at Carleton University, co-chair of the Distinguished Leaders Speakers Series at St. Francis Xavier University School of Business Administration, director of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, director of the Financial Services Ombuds Network,and has served on public and private boards and committees, including United Way, Best Buddies Canada, and Ottawa Hospital Foundation.

In the summer of 2006, Anderson climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak to raise awareness of literacy issues and funds for children’s literacy programs in Tanzania.
